30th April 2024 - Catch Up® Literacy – Supporting Reading

A bespoke training course for parents and carers based on Catch Up® Literacy

What is Catch Up® Literacy – Supporting Reading?
Catch Up has developed a bespoke training course, based on the original Catch Up® Literacy intervention, to enable parents and carers to support their child’s reading skills in the home setting.

The training focuses on proven and positive strategies around how to share a reading book or text with a child, building their confidence and enjoyment when reading and supporting the improvement of their reading skills. These strategies are designed to be used with children who find reading challenging and are aged between 6 and 14 years.

The training takes place as a stand-alone, 3-hour live online course, facilitated by one of our Catch Up® Accredited Trainers.

Parents and carers who book to attend receive a training booklet, all the paperwork required, guidance on which books/texts to use and ongoing support from the Catch Up team.

What will the course involve?
The outline of the training course is as follows:

1. Struggling readers:

  • Stage 3 – The individual session

The development of Catch Up® Literacy – Supporting Reading
Catch Up® Literacy is a proven, one-to-one intervention used widely in schools and other educational settings to support learners who are struggling with reading.

In 2021 Catch Up was approached by ‘What Works for Children’s Social Care’ to take part in a research project and deliver the Catch Up® Literacy training to foster and kinship carers. This was an extremely positive project and the report was published last year. The summary of this report states that, ‘… Catch Up® Literacy is feasible to deliver by foster carers in the home. Carers reported increased confidence and skill in reading for the children in their care’.

Catch Up built on this experience and worked with the Norfolk Virtual School to create a bespoke Literacy training course, Catch Up® Literacy – Supporting Reading (based on the Catch Up® Literacy training). This training course is specifically designed to enable parents and carers to support reading progress in a home setting.

Feedback from the Norfolk Virtual School has been very positive. The Inclusion and Achievement Adviser told us; ‘The organisation of the programme and its resources are outstanding with everything being delivered in a timely and professional way. The online course has been well received with feedback stating ‘the best online training that I have accessed, the delivery was varied and informed and really engaging.’ Carers have commented on the positive impact that they have seen through the programme.’
