13th November 2024 - How does a learner get to Catch Up® Literacy level 12?

There are 12 levels of reading difficulty identified in Catch Up® Literacy. Levels 1 – 10 are intended for Primary-aged learners and levels 4 – 12 are for Secondary learners.

In the Catch Up® Literacy e-file, on page 82, there is a chart which shows how to correlate the number of words a pupil has read accurately in Assessment 2 (sight word knowledge) and an indicative Catch Up® starting level. The maximum score a learner can achieve on Assessment 2 is 240, and that would suggest Catch Up® level 10 as the starting level.

Some older learners, identified as benefiting from Catch Up® Literacy, may recognise on sight 211- 240 words on Assessment 2, indicating a starting Catch Up® level of 10. However, these same learners may not be able to read those assessment words in the context of a text and they may not read with comprehension. By starting at level 10, the supporting adult has the opportunity in the Catch Up® twice-weekly 15 minute individual sessions to ensure that the learner is:

  • using a range of reading strategies successfully

  • reading with understanding

As the learner develops those skills and demonstrates using them with confidence, so the supporting adult will move them upwards through the remaining Catch Up® Literacy levels.

So that is how the supporting adult is able to track reading progress from Catch Up® level 10 to Catch Up® level 11 and ultimately to Catch Up® level 12.

Some older learners scoring highly on Assessment 2 may be able to read Catch Up® level 10 books fluently and with comprehension, but they may not have scored so well on Assessment 5 (Spelling knowledge). If that is the case, then Catch Up® Literacy may not be the most suitable intervention for them and you should consider putting them on a small group spelling intervention programme.
